Internship

Our goal is to promote a positive internship experience that provides the skills and confidence to be a successful general equine practitioner. Interns will gain experience in all aspects of equine practice, including both inpatient and ambulatory cases. Weekly case/topic rounds address a variety of topics in medicine. Our interns are expected to transition to working independently on an emergent and routine basis, with the guidance of senior clinicians. Interns have the opportunity to assume a primary role in client communication and emergency case management.

Initially, interns will work with staff veterinarians but will transition to independent work as internship progresses. Work will include but not be limited to routine wellness care, dentistry, mare and stallion management, colic workups, lameness exams, emergency care, internal medicine, and alternative medicine.

Allegheny Equine is also committed to the work-life balance and well-being of everyone on our team, including interns. Interns will receive 2 weekends off per month, as well one full weekday off per week.

Externship

We strive to provide an educational and hands-on experience for veterinary students interested in equine practice. Externs spend time with all staff veterinarians and are encouraged to participate in after-hours emergencies. Doctors’ meetings are held biweekly – students are expected to attend and encouraged to participate in case discussion. On-site housing is available at no charge, and students in their clinical year may be eligible for a stipend through NVA.

Pre-Vet Students

Individuals interested in applying to veterinary school are welcome to “ride along” with our veterinarians to gain more experience in equine practice. Shadowing is available Monday through Friday on a first come, first serve basis throughout the year. Shadows must be at least 18 years of age.

Vet Tech Students

We have availability for veterinary technician externships on a first come, first serve basis. Our technician externs gain experience both on the road and in the clinic. Horse handling experience and an in-person interview are required for these externships.
